Margate LARP Sessions #1: New Voices in Art

For the first Margate LARP* Session we will be playing ‘New Voices in Art’, a light touch chamber larp set in the world of contemporary art, although art in itself is not the actual theme of the game. Rather, art and the social scene that accompanies it is used to explore themes of ambition, social pretence, desire, and of being alone with your innermost thoughts.

This Larp is about a group of artists who meet on the eve of the opening of the ‘Margate Summer Exhibition’ – the first of its kind in the area. Participants play a version of themselves as aspiring artists, who all have work in the exhibition (this will be provided).

The game plays out like a party where people mostly don’t know each other beforehand, chatting, flirting, discussing art, networking and mostly having a good time. One can also play bi-characters such as critics, collectors and so on.

All materials for this session will be provided as well as a short publication of supplementary reading material to help frame the game. There will also be time at the end of the session for an open discussion on how best to structure future sessions – all are invited to contribute.

Please do bring along a snack or two for the snack table – and it’s BYOB if you fancy a drink. Please also click attending if you are planning on coming so we know how many “artworks” to provide.

No experience of larp is necessary. This larp was chosen for its accessibility and designed to be as adaptable as possible to all that play. The workshop is also very short and simple. If you have any questions and/or requirements, please do email info@openschooleast.org.

*Larp is originally an acronym for Live Action Role Playing, but today it’s used as name in itself. It refers to an interactive activity where people immerse themselves in fictional worlds to experience how others might live. Larps are played by groups of 2 or more people facilitated by a games master whose role is to ensure the players feel safe, understand the rules, roles and fiction within the larp.

‘New Voices in Art’ was designed by Tor Kjetil Edland, Arvid Falch and Erling Rognli and will be hosted on the night by George Harding and Una Hamilton Helle

Margate LARP Sessions is an informal, monthly meet-up for play testing and discussing ideas centred around the tradition of Nordic Larp. Find more in our facebook group Margate LARP Sessions
