If capitalism constantly exploits us, then why do we seem to accept it as a natural fact? And why are there no ‘realistic’ alternatives on the horizon? This session will consider the role of ideology in shaping and distorting our perceptions of social reality. We’ll also think about how consumption shapes our identities and reproduces power relations. When the world around us seems to be teeming with ‘stuff’, why is it that we still don’t have enough?
